Come Easter, home cooks churn out chocolate eggs not just for the Easter egg hunt but also for those who just want their share of edible fun. Carrot cake, slathered with thick cream cheese frosting and flecked with cinnamon and walnuts, celebrate the rebirth in Easter.
While buffalo chicken wings are regulars during Super Bowl Sunday parties across America, it is the all-American fudgy brownie, served a la mode, that cements this holiday in the hearts and minds of football fans. Likewise, green mint cheesecake bars are best served for St. Patrick’s Day, just because it is minty with a subtle hint of green.
After the day’s fasting during the Ramadan, our Muslim brothers share in the Iftar dinner. During this time, sticky, flaky, and sweet baklava is shared by all as one of the desserts for Iftar.
For the festival of lights, sweets cannot be far behind. For Hanukkah, it’s the rugalach (holiday cookies filled with brown sugar, cinnamon, and raisins). The rugalach are sometimes shaped like mini-croissants. For the Diwali, it’s an expansive lot of milky Indian sweets. The sweets also have pistachios and cashews for texture as well as more flavor.
It’s pies galore as holiday desserts when thanksgiving rolls in. there’s apple pie, pecan pie, pumpkin pie and lemon meringue pie to please everyone on the Thanksgiving table. Adults would also be happy to receive caramel apples and homemade candies for Halloween.
Lastly, the finale of holiday desserts include many varieties of Christmas breads, cookies (as gifts or for exchange with the community), and the Christmas log (buche de noel), made from jelly roll cake and decorated to resemble a holiday log.
